About Beyond Coal

Beyond Coal at Virginia Tech (VTBC) is a student organization committed to transitioning Virginia Tech’s coal plant to 100% clean, renewable energy by 2020. VTBC is a campaign formed under the Sierra Club and is part of a movement to bring clean energy to over 60 US colleges and universities.

Coal is a controversial energy source due to destructive mining practices, environmental issues, societal burdens, and increasing health and economic costs. Virginia Tech can become a leader in innovation and sustainability by researching, funding, and implementing clean energy sources and eventually moving beyond coal. VTBC believes that the Blacksburg and Virginia Tech community can work together to solve today’s energy issues.

Please join our coalition of students, alumni, faculty, and community members to move VT beyond coal!

We are also beginning to network with students and faculty at VT that are researching renewable energy technology. If you, or someone you know, would like to help our campaign find real solutions using the research opportunities already happening on campus, then please contact us!
